Central Ohio's housing market is in need of additional supply across the spectrum of price points and in a variety of communities. A new report from the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio finds a troubling shortfall looming as recent permitting activity fails to keep pace with growth—about 500,000 new jobs and an estimated 1 million new residents by 2050, according to the Urban Land Institute and Mid-Ohio Regional Planning Commission.
Meanwhile, peer markets such as Charlotte and Nashville are building homes and apartments at a much faster rate to accommodate their own rapid growth projections. If Central Ohio aims to be competitive as an appealing place to live and do business, we must have affordably priced housing available to support residents.
Findings of the report will be presented for the first time at CMC by Rob Vogt of Vogt Strategic Insights. Analysis will follow in a panel discussion featuring Jon Melchi (Executive Director of the Building Industry Association of Central Ohio), Bob Schottenstein (Chairman, President, and CEO of M/I Homes), Sandy Doyle-Ahern (President of EMH&T), and host Jim Weiker (Business Editor of The Columbus Dispatch).They will address the broader economic and social implications of the region's housing shortage, as well as potential solutions to address roadblocks such as land availability, zoning limitations, regulatory costs, worker shortages and materials inflation.
